Allo allo kiddies. I'm still in Johannesburg..."why are you in Joburg?" you say? Well, let me tell you why...
Last Wednesday, during our morning Journ meeting, I was chosen to attend the 5th World Summit on Media and Children, previously held in Brazil, London, Australia, etc. I was to be put on the Highway Africa News Agency payroll, and they flew me up to JHB with a small contingent of journos, put me up in a hotel, provided me with a daily stipend for food, etc. My job? To film a short documentary-style piece about the conference, and to assist in ICASA-sponsored training to educate schoolchildren about print, television, and radio journalism. My carry-on luggage? A camera, tripod, sound equipment, a miniMac, flat plasma computer screen, keyboard and mouse.
I arrived early Thursday morning and we began work on Friday, which is when I found out that I was solely responsible for the 15 kids that wanted to learn about TV, because nobody thought to hire more than one TV journalist, while there are about 6 print writers. GLORY.
So I've basically been running around Sandton like a mad thing for the past almost-week, trying to keep my head on straight. I'm making great contacts though, ones that might be rather useful once I get to Scotland, so that's always a good thing. I'm REALLY looking forward to returning to Grahamstown on Thursday, though...I miss it muchly. :)
It's also been nice to catch up with friends in JHB who I haven't seen in a while, as I hardly ever get up to JHB. Then of course there are friends who say they want to see me but conveniently never call or sms while I'm here...but it shows you who your real friends are, I suppose.
I must make way for other desperate journalists who want to use the computers. Cheerios, munchkins...
"We represent the lollipop kid..."
